When creating a new website, one of the most important parts of the design process is choosing the right fonts. The fonts you choose should match your brand style as well as be easy-to-read and aesthetically pleasing for site visitors. Frequently we find that there are so many fonts available to us that it becomes a challenging task to find fonts that work well together to convey both beauty and professionalism. Fortunately, Google Fonts provides web fonts that make sites beautiful, fast and open through great typography.
What are Google fonts?
They are web fonts that are all open-source and free for personal and commercial use. The collection consists of a library of over 800 libre licensed fonts that contain multiple weights and styles. These fonts can be used for print as well as customized for your own use.
Here are a few tips when you choose fonts for branding and creating a website.
Choose fonts that have multiple weights and styles. There are some fonts that have only one style in the Google font collection. I always avoid using these fonts for design projects. Fonts with multiple styles (including light, regular, bold, and italic) that are also available in different weights, not only create beautiful typography but also help certain words and headlines to stand out by using bold fonts. As you can see in the example below, you can play with font families to create more interesting typography.
Choose font combinations of serif and sans-serif fonts or different font styles to create contrast. Use two different fonts to make typography more engaging for the target audience and easier to read. I created an example of typography below. I paired Lato, a sans-serif type font, with Playfair Display, a serif type font. The contrast between the two fonts results in a clean and elegant design feature that is attractive to high-end clients.
What is serif font: A serif font is a small line attached to the end of a stroke in a letter or symbol. Popular serif fonts include Times New Roman and Courier. Playfair Display is also a serif font.
What is sans-serif font: A sans-serif font has no line attached to the end of a stroke in a letter or symbol. Popular sans-serif fonts include Helvetica and Arial. Lato is also a sans-serif font.
Here are a few examples of clean and elegant Google font pairings for your brand and website.
